10 Questions to Ask Before Booking a Barn Wedding Venue

Barn weddings are gorgeous — the beams, the string lights, the golden-hour photos. But not all barn venues are created equal, and the difference usually shows up after you've signed. As a venue that hosts these questions every week, here's exactly what we'd ask if we were in your shoes.

1. What's actually included in the price?

Tables? Chairs? Setup and teardown? Some venues quote a low base rate and charge for everything else à la carte. Ask for the full list in writing before you compare venues on price.

2. How many weddings do you host per weekend?

If the answer is "two or three," your vendors may be rushed and your timeline squeezed. At Midwest Harvest Hills we host one wedding per weekend — the farm is yours.

3. What's the rain plan?

Wisconsin weather has opinions. A real rain plan means a covered space that holds your full guest count — not "we'll figure it out." Our 40x80 pavilion and stone barn mean the party happens either way.

4. What are the power and restroom situations?

Unromantic? Yes. Critical? Also yes. Ask about outlets for the DJ and caterer, and whether restrooms are on-site or rented.

5. When can vendors get in to set up?

Morning-of setup makes for a frantic day. Ask if you can decorate the day before — it's one of the most underrated perks a venue can offer.

6. Are there noise or end-time rules?

Rural venues often have quiet hours. Know when the music has to stop so your timeline (and your DJ contract) matches reality.

7. Can we use our own caterer and bar service?

Some venues lock you into their vendor list at their prices. Ask what's required, what's recommended, and what's up to you.

8. Where do photos happen if the weather turns?

Walk the property and ask to see indoor photo spots. A venue with character — stone walls, timber beams, orchard rows — gives your photographer options in any weather.

9. What does parking look like for our guest count?

Grass lot? Attendant? Shuttle-friendly? Grandma's sedan and your college friends' carpool both need a plan.

10. What happens if we need to reschedule?

Life happens. Ask about the deposit, transfer, and cancellation terms up front — a venue that answers this clearly is a venue you can trust with your biggest day.
